I tried to upgrade using the automatic upgrade feature of WordPress 2.7 but I always go this error message.

Could not copy file: /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/core/wordpress/wp-trackback.php

Installation Failed

After searching the internet, I found other bloggers were having the same problem (like this).   I tried doing the stuff in lvsonline but still, I encounter problems.

I’ve changed permissions in directories to 777, used both firefox and IE but still the same problem.

I ended up upgrading the old way.  I downloaded the  wordpress 2.71 tgz and uploaded to my host and just   tar zxvpf wordpress-2.7.1.tgz to overwrite my installation.

That finally worked out properly.

I too had the exact same problem and followed the described steps. Same result.
it appears I may well have to manually update.

I did not encounter any problem when I upgraded my WP blogs to 2.7.1

Surprisingly, I’ve upgraded one of my other blogs and I didn’t encounter any problems.

    I wonder what’s the difference?
