DIY Variable Voltage Bench Power Supply using ATX power from PC

How to Add Variable Voltage to Your ATX Based Bench Power Supply

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
If you’ve built a bench power supply using an old ATX computer power supply, you may feel limited by the choice of voltages + 3.3V, + 5V, and +/- 12V DC. Suppose you’re breadboarding a circuit that’s meant to be run off a 9V battery? This is how to build an add-on variable-voltage “module” for your power supply.

Steps

  1. Gather the materials required and construct the circuit from the circuit diagram. It would be a good idea to get the datasheet for the regulator from the manufacturers website.
  2. Get some banana leads and connect the +12V and -12V outputs from your modded ATX supply and connect it to the input of your variable module. Use a multimeter to measure the output voltage.
  3. Once you have built the circuit test it carefully and measure the output voltage. You should be able to vary the voltage from about 1.5V up to 22V by turning the variable resistor. If you are using the LM317 the output current will be restricted to 1.5A, if using the LM338K it should be slightly higher check the datasheet for exact information.

Tips

  • I used a small piece of veroboard to build this little addon. You could use matrix board or design a small PCB. It wouldn’t be difficult.
  • Use sensible wire lengths if creating a permanent connection to the ATX supply.
  • Make sure that the +12V binding post is well isolated from ground and from the -12V binding post.
  • During use the regulator may get hot. Use a heatsink if necessary.

Warnings

  • If you’ve already built an ATX Power Supply based bench/lab supply, you’ve already run the risks – this project is less dangerous. Soldering irons can burn you, hand tools can cut you; don’t drink and hack.
  • Use common sense. If you find the regulator gets hot use a heatsink.

Things You’ll Need

  • You will need the following materials:
  • 1x LM317 or LM338K Voltage regulator (With heatsink and heatsink paste)
  • 1x 100nF Capacitors (ceramic or tantalum)
  • 1x 1uF Capacitors Electrolytic
  • 1X 1N4001 or 1N4002 Power Diode
  • 1X 120 Ohm resistor
  • 1x 5k Ohm variable resistor
  • Optional
    • Some Veroboard or a matrix board and some suitably thick wire for connecting the circuit.
    • A small enclosure about the size of a wall wart to put the circuit in.

  • Indispensable
    • An ATX power Supply already modded to provide +12V, -12V, +5V and -5V

3 Days ’till Fedora Core 9

Sunday 11 May 2008 @ 9:43 pm

I’ve been waiting for Fedora Core 9 for a couple of weeks now. Three more days till release. Can’t wait to get my hands on FC9 and try it out.

I have an XPC shuttle which I loaded FC5 a few years ago. I plan to reformat the harddisk and load FC9.

New features include:

KDE4

Network Manager support for CDMA, GSM mobile broadband cards

jigdo

and a whole lot more.

Check out the full feature list at the link below

Jollibee Chicken Steak Ads on Yahoo

Friday 6 July 2007 @ 10:55 am

jollibee chicken stead

I just saw this today when I fired up my yahoo messenger. So Jollibee discovers the potential of localized internet advertising. I bet we will be seeing more of such ads in the future.

Incidentally, I tried ordering Jollibee Chicken Steak a few weeks ago. It was not bad actually. I ordered the Php49 value meal and had an extra Php39 solo so I had 2 sets of these Jollibee chicken steak for about Php88. Not bad for 2 rice and 2 pcs of Jollibee chicken steak plus a drink.

5 Things You Did Not Know About Me

Thursday 18 January 2007 @ 7:30 pm

I was tagged twice and I still haven’t responded to the other one. Anyway, here’s one which came from seodance.

1. I love bowling.

Back in the late 90′s I’m into competitive bowling. One of my dreams was to get into the Philippine Team (bowling), and compete internationally. I had that dream ever since I was 12 years old, and yet to be fulfilled.
2. I’m lefthanded (but I bowl using my right hand)

I’m left handed when I write but I do other stuff such as bowling, billiards, and darts with my right hand.

3. I’m fascinated about Egypt

In fact I have a mural painting with Heiroglyphics on it. I tried learning basic heiroglyphics alphabet/sounds and converted (to the best of my abilities) 2 of my favorite songs to heiroglyphics. That song was painted on the walls of our living room.

4. Me an my wife did a past life regression before

I like to read about paranormal stuff and we did had a past life regression in the late 90′s. Unfortunately, there’s no way of verifying it.

5. I did some oil paintings before.

During grade school, I learned how to do oil painting and did a couple of paintings before. I stopped during late high school when I need to concentrate more on studies and other stuff.

I’ll try to update this blog on who to tag next.

Firefox Crop Circle

firefox crop circle

So the aliens are now using firefox as their browser. Huh. Another one of those crop circle hoax. But it’s nice don’t you think?

Whoever made this firefox crop circle really made it to google maps.

So what’s next after this firefox crop circle? The linux penguin crop circle perhaps?

Did you know that Exist exists?

Friday 17 November 2006 @ 9:49 am

I had a privilege of being invited to a press conference of Exist yesterday together with Migz, Gail, and Abe. I just learned about Exist on that day and was impressed that it was included in the Top 100 Companies in Asia given out by Red Herring Inc.

This means Red Herring thinks Exist is a rising star. So what do they have that the other startups don’t? A passionate and visionary leader named Winston Damarillo. Just to fill in who Winston Damarillo is, he is a serial entrepreneur who built Gluecode Software (he was the CEO) and later on was bought by IBM. Starting and leading a company is really not new to him.

During the course of the event, I’ve learned that they are active in the development of world class open source software such as Geronimo, Jetspeed, and Pluto. I’m not an avid JAVA fan myself but I know for a fact that people who are active in the development of open source have great skills and passion for their craft.

If you’re into open source, you’ll probably wonder why people who have day jobs doing software development stuff, go home, eat dinner and spend a couple more hours during the night and weekends developing more software and not being paid for it. Now imagine being able to tap into the expertise of these people and have them work for your software project. Would you think you’ll end up with great software? I think so.

Exist’s expertise includes J2EE technologies, platforms, and frameworks, XML, and any cutting edge JAVA technology.

They’ve also been giving back to the academe. It was mentioned that they had talks with De La Salle University, and Ateneo about programs or electives that students can take which enables students to be aware and knowledgeable on current mainstream technologies. Winston mentioned that if they can assist the academe to develop the same skills they teach to their employees, it would be better for the students and also for them as they can tap into these students once they graduate.

My free Google T-Shirt

Friday 10 November 2006 @ 7:17 pm

google tshirt

So here’s my new google shirt. Got this from Aileen Apolo (Google Country Consultant for Philippines) a few days ago.

For those people who attended the SEO Beercon and got the chocolates, were you able to get your shirt already?

Update:

Some people made a comment about modeling the shirt. So here’s a new pic with Gelo.
